Wensleydale, the largest of the Yorkshire Dales, is a breathtakingly beautiful valley known for its lush greenery and fertile landscape. Rolling hills dotted with sheep that graze leisurely on the rugged fells, create a picturesque scene. The meadows burst with vibrant colours, filled with a diverse array of wildflowers that sway gently in the breeze. Wensleydale not only enchants visitors with its stunning visual appeal but also provides a sanctuary for a wide variety of wildlife, making Wensleydale a true gem of the English countryside.
When John Wesley visited the dale in May 1790, he recorded in his journal, 'Crossed over the enormous mountain into lovely Wensleydale, the largest by far of all the dales, as well as the most beautiful'. Carving its way confidently through the very heart of the dales, this broad U-shaped valley has many natural and man-made features. Celts, Romans, Vikings and Normans have all left their impression on the landscape.
The delights of Wensleydale, freely available to anyone, are best experienced by walkers who can examine its beauty close up. Those with an interest in geology, history and nature will find it abundant in riches.
Each walk has a two page description, a colour map with numbered arrow pointers and route directions with grid references to aid map reading. All of the walks follow circular routes ranging from 6.7 to 10.2 miles (10.8 to 16.5km).
